36th Annual CNS Conference - 2016 June 19-22

Presented at:
36th Annual CNS Conference
2016 June 19-22
Toronto, Canada
Session Title:
Plenary 1B: Sustainability of Canada’s Nuclear Generation

F. Dermarkar (CANDU Owners' Group)

A cornerstone to a sustainable nuclear future is innovation.  This includes innovation to address operational challenges and regulatory issues.  It also includes innovation that gets ahead of today’s problems and develops ideas that could be applied 10-25 years from now to enhance the safety, reliability, cost effectiveness and public acceptance of the technology.  Historically, the R&D program managed by the CANDU Owners Group (COG) has included both a near-term as well as a strategic, longer-term component.  Over time, the priority shifted to shorter-term R&D to address near term needs.  The COG members have recognized the need to increase the focus on longer term, strategic issues.  This presentation will describe the steps taken by COG and its members to establish a Strategic R&D program, and the current status of the program.
