Abstract

The increased recognition of Greenhouse-Gas Free electric generation has provided a new impetus for nuclear power. This will raise the profile of long-term fuel cycle sustainability. This paper provides an update survey of the future potential for fuel recycling, considering current prospects for nuclear power. The paper outlines the basis for considering fuel reprocessing and recycling, and the gaps to be addressed in order to meet expectations for a closed fuel cycle. The paper notes CANDU’s role in using existing inventories of reprocessed materials, and future roles to demonstrate and use advancements in recycling technology.
