POST-IRRADIATION EXAMINATION OF BRUCE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION ELEMENTS AT CHALK RIVER LABORATORIES (CNL)

Post-Irradiation Examination of Bruce Nuclear Generating Station Elements at Chalk River Laboratories (CNL) Bruce Power shipped five fuel elements from five irradiated fuel bundles to Chalk River Laboratories, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) in 2013 for routine non-destructive examination (NDE) and destructive examination (DE). Five elements were examined to characterize the anomalous light deposits observed on the fuel cladding. Examination activities included: Hot Cell Visual Examination Metallographic and Ceramographic Examination Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Examination of Deposit Material Radioisotope Measurements for Activation Analysis All fuel elements were confirmed intact and comparable to 37-element fuel previously examined in the hot cells. The deposits were observed in detail using optical microscopy and secondary electron (SE) imaging. The composition of the deposits was determined to be primarily iron. The UO2 fuel and Zr-4 cladding appeared unaffected by the deposits.
