Abstract

Thermodynamic considerations of matters pertaining to the use of Inconel as a replacement for beryllium to braze Zircaloy are discussed. The analysis, treating Inconel as a binary Ni-Cr alloy, is grounded in the thermodynamic modeling of the Ni-Cr, Zr-Cr and Ni-Zr binary phase diagrams to develop treatments for the various solution phases and several intermetallic compounds. The properties so estimated are used with other data to perform stability computations by the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Matters of particular interest include: the liquid phase formation when Ni-Cr alloy is in contact with Zr, and the events involving reactions with the protective ZrO2 coating.
