The Advanced Fuel CANDU Reactor (AFCR) is an innovative design that is uniquely positioned to play a key role through its use of recycled uranium and thorium-based fuels. The synergistic utilization of recycled uranium from Light Water Reactors (LWRs) creates a near-term path towards closing the fuel cycle, while the deployment of thorium-based fuels increases resource diversification and overall fuel sustainability. The discussion will focus on the strategic cooperation with China to bring this technology to market and the future roadmap for AFCR development over the next several decades.
