Abstract

Existing CANDU® reactors must periodically purge the AGS to maintain the system within its required operating range. The frequency of purging varies from station to station, and has been reported by some stations to be highest just after commissioning. Purging of the AGS requires operator intervention, consumes CO2, and (depending on station operating conditions) contributes to emissions of tritium and Argon-41. Candu Energy Inc. has devised a modification for the existing plants that would allow AGS operation without frequent purging. In addition, the modification would also provide additional insurance to the utility in coping with higher than expected leakage into the AGS without impairing the Leak Before Break philosophy.
