Abstract

OPG Nuclear has performed calculations and testing on shut-down Nuclear units to simulate the gravity-driven flow of water from the deaerator storage tank to steam generators in the event of a Beyond Design Basis Accident, Total Loss of AC Power. Use of the deaerator storage tank water to steam generators acts as an interim heatsink and provides additional time to implement the long-term heatsink EME (Emergency Mitigating Equipment). Challenges, insights, lessons learned, and results are presented for both the pre-test calculations as well as the successful field tests.
