Course Overview

Note: There is no pre-requisite for this course. Even if you did not take Part 1 of the course in 2020 November, there is no problem, you can still register for this offering.

The CNS CANDU Technology and Safety Course, held for the last many years in a physical setting over 3 days in March, has had to be cancelled/postponed to 2022 March on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to provide a partial replacement for the full course, an on-line course is being organized, offered over a number of days separated in time. The first slice  took place on 2020 November 13, and the second slice will now be offered on two half-days, 2021 March 22 and 23, from 8 am to 11:30 am (Toronto local time).

This on-line offering will have a small number of presentations on the technology of CANDU reactors, on: 

  • CANDU fuel management and operation 
  • Detectors for CANDU safe operation, 
  • Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) and BOP, and
  • Reactor and plant control

The CNS is presenting this course to enhance the professional and technical capabilities of its members (and non-members) working in, or interested in, the nuclear industry.  The course is ideally suited for beginning professionals, but also beneficial to experienced professionals.  Come broaden your nuclear knowledge beyond your specific area of work and your own area of expertise.

Lecturer Bios

Dr. Ben Rouben, Fellow of CNS

Ben holds an Hons. B.Sc. from McGill University and a Ph.D. from the MIT.  Ben joined AECL in 1975, where he worked on the design and analysis of CANDU reactors.  From 1993 to 2006, Ben served as Manager of the Reactor Core Physics Branch at AECL.  He retired from AECL in 2007 February.

Ben was President of the CNS in 1997-98, and was its Executive Director, 2011-2019.  He was elected CNS Fellow in 1999.    

Ben is currently a consultant, and an Adjunct Professor at McMaster and at the Ontario Tech where he teaches various courses on Reactor Physics and Power Plant Operation.  He teaches also in the M. Eng. Program offered by UNENE, the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering, where he also serves as Secretary/Treasurer. 

Dr. Jingliang Hu

Jingliang got his PhD in the field of Experimental Particle Physics in 1997, specializing in the nuclear physics and design of various particle detectors. Before joining AECL (now SNC-Lavalin Candu), he used to work in Brookhaven National Lab and TRIUMF for various high-energy particle-physics experiments, with different types of nuclear particle detectors. 

Jingliang has 15+ years of experience with the CANDU reactors, particularly in the area of reactor physics, Reactor Overpower Protection (ROP/NOP) system, and reactor operational support. His current work covers a wide range in reactor-physics-related design support and safety analysis for both the operating CANDU reactors and the new-build designs.

Dr. George Bereznai

George is a professor and director of industry training programs in the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science at Ontario Tech University. He is the founding dean of the nuclear programs at the university, having been appointed in 2001. 

George joined Ontario Hydro in 1971 and worked for 30 years in the nuclear division, where he was responsible for full scope training simulators and the use of computers in training. 

George is a professional engineer, having obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Adelaide in Australia, and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. 

Gilbert Raiskums

Gilbert is a graduate of the Engineering Science Program at the University of Toronto and has worked in the nuclear industry for over 40 years.

Following his initial plant commissioning experience at Pickering with Ontario Hydro, Gilbert spent an extensive period in the I&C design area for CANDU reactors with AECL and later Candu Energy Inc.  

Gilbert was also the lead design for a number of digital control technology upgrades in the US nuclear industry, such as the TRIGA research reactor.  

Gilbert now works as a consultant to Terrestrial Energy Inc. for design of plant instrumentation and control systems for their IMSR400 molten salt reactor.

Dr. Wei Shen, Fellow of CNS

Wei received his Bachelor degree (in 1988) and Ph.D. degree (in 1993) in nuclear engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University, China. Wei has been working on both PWR and CANDU industry for over 30 years.

Wei currently works as Safety and License R&D Program Manager at CANDU Owners Group (COG). Prior joining COG in 2017, Wei worked as a Technical Specialist at the CNSC for 5 years, and worked at AECL for 14 years and was promoted as the Principal Specialist (the top technical position) at AECL in 2009.

Wei is the Chair of Nuclear Science & Engineering Division of the CNS. Wei also serves as an Adjunct Full Professor with Royal Military College of Canada and with Xi’an Jiaotong University, China.
