Rudy Cronk Conference Co-Chair PLC Fire Safety Engineering (PLC)Mr. Cronk currently serves in the role of VP of Business Development at PLC Fire Safety Engineering. Mr. Cronk is an experienced Senior Fire Officer with an extensive background in industrial and municipal Fire Protection. He has held Chief Officer positions at multiple organizations and municipalities. Mr. Cronk is a member in good standing on the CSA N393 committee and is presently a member of the CNS council.

Shahina Kurien Conference Co-Chair Bruce PowerShahina has 19 years of experience in Nuclear Fire Protection Program and holds a Master’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering from University of Maryland with GPA 4.0. She is currently employed at Bruce Power in Emergency & Protective Services as Fire Protection Program Manager. Previously Shahina was employed as Fire Protection Program Authority for AECL(now known as CNL), leading Fire Protection Engineers/Specialists and Fire Prevention sections, responsible fire risk mitigation, fire protection assessments (FSSA/FHA/CCR), Fire Protection Clauses of Operating License, And compliance to Codes & Standards (NBCC, NFCC, NFPAs & CSA N293/393) for AECL’s Canadian sites.
Shahina was a recipient of AECL’s Award of Excellence in 2014 for her leadership in developing and implementing a comprehensive Fire Protection program at AECL.
Shahina chairs CANDU Owners Group’s Fire Protection Semi-annual Workshops, Co-chairs WANO’s International Fire Protection Industry Working Group, holds the vice chair positions for CSA-N293 & N393 Technical Committees. and was a founding member of this conference: CNS FSEP in 2015.

Paul Amendola Website Tap ReportPaul has over 15 years of experience in the fire and life safety industry. He is the Co-Founder of Tap Report, a Toronto based tech company that creates safer workplaces through software. Paul considers himself to be a continuous learner and holds a Business Administration Certificate and Marketing Certificate from George Brown College, a Pre-Service Firefighter certificate from Durham College and many other courses in health and safety. Paul is an active mentor in the Toronto startup ecosystem and has been an NFPA, BOMA, IFMA and TBMOA member for over 10 years.

Dr. Abderrazzaq (Zaq) Bounagui Technical Program Chair - Fire Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)Currently, Dr. Bounagui is the acting director of the Engineering Design Assessment Division at CNSC. He has been a technical specialist at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for over 16 years. He assessed compliance at nuclear facilities, conducting technical reviews for various topics including fire hazard analysis, fire shutdown analysis, code compliance review analysis, fire modelling and design review for fire protection systems, performing inspections, etc. He contributed to the development of various regulatory documents and IAEA guides. He has led various task forces to support the development of CSA N293 and CSA N393 standards. He has been the technical authority for several OECD-NEA fire joint international research projects.
Prior to joining the CNSC, he had worked with the National Research Council of Canada as a research officer. My research activities included fire risk analysis for various infrastructures, analysis of fire statistics, investigation of experimental fire tests, and verification and validation of fire modelling tools.
He has authored and co-authored more than 30 publications in the area of fire safety engineering. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering—Energy Conversion and a master’s degree in Computer Science..

Steve Thompson Technical Program Chair - EmP Bruce PowerSteve Thompson has worked in the nuclear industry since 1983. Steve is currently the Emergency Management Department Manager at Bruce Power – the largest operating nuclear power plant in the world.
Steve has held many different roles in the his career in the nuclear industry including Licensed Shift Manager, Operations Manager, Maintenance Corporate Functional Area Manager.
Steve Has an MBA from the University Of Northumbria in the UK.

Amer Al-Merabi Lead Technical Session Chair Jensen HughesAmer Al Merabi, Nuclear Market Leader for Canada at Jensen Hughes, is a licensed fire protection engineer in Ontario with eight years of experience in Canada. Amer has had the privilege of working for the Canadian regulator (CNSC), private consulting firms, and as well a Canadian nuclear utility (OPG). Amer holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in fire safety from Carleton University. His involvement in the industry also includes participation in several fire protection technical committees such as CSA (for N293 & N393), SFPE Performance Based Design Standard, and multiple ULC committees as well. In addition, Amer has been an instructor at Carleton University since 2019 teaching fire protection courses at the graduate level.
Amer has also been involved in many projects over the years including working on Fire Hazard Assessments, Fire Safe Shutdown Analyses, Performance-Based Designs, Fire Modeling, Audits, and Training at the majority of the Canadian Nuclear sites.

Cindy Leber Venue Chair Building Reports CanadaCindy Leber is the Founder and President of Building Reports Canada (BRC). BRC provides tools for the tracking and documenting of fire and life safety inspections. BRC also provides compliance tracking to the Canadian market, including the nuclear industry. Cindy’s experience across the fire & life safety industry and design/ implementation of various workflow and management software projects, provides members with a unique perspective. Her skills as a registered Mediator and trained Negotiator contribute to her volunteer efforts, including memberships such as the ULC STP/TC: 500F1 committee (Installation, Inspection and Verification of Fire Alarm Systems) and NFPA 909/914 (Codes for the Protection of Cultural Resources and Historic Structures).

Brian Scott Warden Delegates Co-Chair Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating StationScott Worden has been in the fire service industry for over 24 years including his role in the Emergency Response Team at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station(PLNGS). Scott held numerous positions at PLNGS including the role of Lieutenant, Platoon Chief ( Response Team leader),Drill Director, Equipment Officer, Deputy Chief and to current position of Fire Chief. Scott is President of the New Brunswick Industrial Fire Chief’s Association and Chair of the WANO- Fire Protection International Working Group, Equipment Related Fire Sub-Committee.

Katie Ketchum Delegates Co-Chair Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating StationKatie has 17 years experience working in nuclear including positions in Human Resources, Training, Radiation Protection and Emergency Preparedness at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS). She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick and a Bachelor of Technology with a major in Emergency Management from the University of Cape Breton. Katie is a member of the PLNGS Joint Health and Safety Committee and is currently working as the Supervisor of Emergency Preparedness at PLNGS.

Brian Bernard Member at Large CamecoBrian Bernard is a skilled Fire Protection/Security professional with a demonstrated history of excellence in the nuclear industry for the past 21 years.
Throughout Brian’s career at Cameco’s Port Hope Conversion Facility (PHCF), he has conducted countless facility fire inspections, completed training on the Maintenance & Inspection of Fire Protection Systems, and had a key role on the Fire Response Needs Analysis and Fire Hazard Analysis teams. Brian also participated as a vital resource for the successful Fire Systems Upgrades project completed at the facility as required by the CNSC.
In addition to his work at Cameco, Brian is a District Chief and Trainer for Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services (PHFES) . Over the last 20 years he has completed his certification in NFPA 472 Hazmat Technician and Tank Car Specialist, NFPA 1006 Rescue Technician, Water, high angle, confined space, NFPA 1001 Firefighter II, NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level II, NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level II and NFPA 921 Fire and Explosion Investigations.
