The Canadian Nuclear Society congratulates Ontario Power Generation on being granted a licence to construct a Small Modular Reactor at its Darlington site.  This historic milestone builds on Canada’s long standing position as a tier 1 nuclear industry and affirms its position as a leader in the next wave of international nuclear power development.  It is also a significant step on Canada’s journey to net zero and its ability to produce the clean cost effective power needed for a successful economy.  

The Society also thanks the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) for its diligent and timely review of OPG’s application and its conclusion that OPG has adequate programmes in place to ensure that  the public and the environment will be protected.
