The Canadian Nuclear Society is an association of Canadians (and non-Canadians) interested in the present state, history, and/or future, of nuclear science and engineering in Canada. Many of us are scientists, engineers, and technologists directly affected by the Canadian nuclear industry, but we also include members of the general public and educational system who are simply interested in nuclear issues. Directly or indirectly, we are all affected by the nuclear industry; it is the technology that powers our future, and the science that leads the way.

The members of the Sheridan Park Branch include many present and retired employees of both AECL (Sheridan Park Laboratories) and Ontario Power Generation (formerly Ontario Hydro, which operated the various nuclear power stations nearby). We also have members from related businesses in the area, as well as the general public.

The CNS welcomes participation from anyone interested in Canadian nuclear science and engineering, whether or not you are directly involved with the nuclear industry. Please contact any of our representatives, or email this website, to learn more about membership in the CNS.

BRANCH INFORMATION AND EVENTS

UPCOMING WEBINARS:

Demonstrating Long-Term Safety for Nuclear Fuel Disposal in Canada

Date/time:   Tuesday May 4, 2021, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Speaker:     Dr. Mihaela Ion, Ph.D., M.Sc., Manager Safety Assessment, Nuclear Waste Management Organization, Toronto

Summary:  The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is responsible for the implementation of Adaptive Phased Management; the federally approved plan for the safe long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel.  Under this plan, used nuclear fuel will ultimately be placed within a deep geological repository in a suitable host rock formation.  Demonstrating the long-term safety for nuclear fuel disposal in Canada is an important aspect in building confidence that the repository will protect the people and the environment over hundreds of thousands of years.  This presentation describes the strategy and the active programs to develop the basis for the Canadian safety case.
