ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Solutions to emerging or ongoing problems often require innovative and multidisciplinary solutions that involve elements of engineering from: materials, chemistry, stress analysis, thermal-hydraulic analysis, probabilistic assessment methods, examination and inspection approaches, and operational strategies. This is the case for most major nuclear plant systems and components, regardless of reactor type. The focus for the MCFD2021 Conference is on the challenges, innovations, and experiences encountered when addressing issues of chemistry, materials, or fitness-for-service in nuclear power plants.

This international conference will be of interest to representatives from various sectors of the nuclear industry including: material and equipment vendors, technical and engineering service providers, utility technical staff, regulators, designers, researchers, students, and academia.

Student participation is encouraged, in particular by means of a student session. Top student submissions may be selected for full presentation at the conference.

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

  • to provide a forum for exchanging views, ideas, and information relating to chemistry, materials, and fitness-for-service
  • to share technical engineering in support of life extension and refurbishment of nuclear plant major components.

Mark Knutson, P.Eng.

Senior Vice President, Enterprise Engineering and Chief Nuclear Engineer

Ontario Power Generation

Mark Knutson is the Senior Vice President of Enterprise Engineering and Chief Nuclear Engineer for Ontario Power Generation. He brings a wealth of experience having worked for OPG for 33 years, most recently as the Senior Vice President of Pickering Nuclear which is a 6 nuclear reactor station. Mark started his career as an Instrumentation and Control engineer after graduating from the University of Windsor with a degree in electrical engineering. He then became a licensed Shift Manager, and progressed to further leadership positions including Operations Manager at Pickering Nuclear and Director of Operations and Maintenance for Nuclear Corporate. He has also held positions as the Director of Projects and the Senior Manager of Engineering at Pickering Nuclear.

Gary Newman, M.A.Sc., P. Eng

Mr. Gary Newman, M.A.Sc., P. Eng., is the Chief Engineer and Senior Vice President of Engineering at Bruce Power L.P. Bruce Power’s Vision is “We Power the Future” and our Mission is “To safely provide clean, affordable, reliable power and life-saving medical isotopes while strengthening our communities and protecting the environment to secure tomorrow.”

Mr. Newman was appointed to his current position in June 2008. He is the Design Authority for Bruce Power and carries responsibility for all Engineering activity at the Bruce Power L.P. site and is the current Bruce Power Director and Chairman of the CANDU Owners Group Board of Directors, Director and Vice-Chairman of the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering Board of Directors and the Bruce Power Director on the Advanced Nuclear Research Centre Board of Directors. Mr. Newman joined Bruce Power in 2004 as the Department Manager of Equipment Life Cycle Engineering and prior to that was employed by AMEC- Nuclear Safety Solution Ltd., Ontario Power Generation and originally joined Ontario Hydro in 1990.

Andy Hayward

Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station

Andy Hayward is the Engineering Director and Chief Nuclear Engineer at Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station. Andy graduated from University of New Brunswick in 1988 from Chemical Engineering. He has been with Point Lepreau for 12 years in various managerial capacities. Prior to that Andy worked in the specialty cellulose industry up to and including general management of a mill complex in northern Quebec and was involved in construction and commissioning of two conventional power generation facilities.

Mohammadreza Baghbanan

Mohammad joined the Nuclear Industry in 2007 after working for a few years in the Steelmaking and Casting Industries. He is currently the OPG project manager and steering committee member for fuel channel life confirmation projects and provides technical oversight for COG fuel channel R&D;, Joint Projects and Strategic R&D.; Mohammad is the CNS Division Chair for Materials, Chemistry and Fitness-for-service Division, as well as CSA N285.8 TSC – working group chair on assessment of reactor core. He holds an Adjunct Professor position with the Materials Science and Engineering Department of the University of Toronto. Mohammad has many years of experience with outage support and fitness-for-service assessments of CANDU reactors Fuel Channels as well as R&D; experience in the areas of Nuclear Engineering, Nanocrystalline Materials, Tribology & Surface Engineering, Thermal Spray Coatings, Vibratory Surface Finishing and Metallurgical Engineering.

Peter J. King

Peter King is an independent consultant in metallurgy, corrosion, and life cycle engineering. Mr. King started his career in the nuclear industry in 1979 as a corrosion researcher at the Ontario Hydro Research Division, where he spent 14 years investigating corrosion of steam generator tubing, heat exchanger tubing, low-pressure turbine disc materials, and nuclear waste container materials. In the 1990s, he left the nuclear industry to spend several years as an Industrial Technology Advisor for IRAP (the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program). Mr. King came back to the nuclear business in 1999, joining Babcock & Wilcox Canada (now BWXT Canada) as a Senior Materials Engineer where he directed research programs on steam generator materials corrosion, provided metallurgical support to manufacturing, and eventually developed and led the Life Cycle Engineering group until he started PJKing Consulting Inc. in 2014.

Mr. King received his B.A.Sc. and M.A.Sc. degrees in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the University of Toronto and is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario.

Nicolas Huin

Dr. Nicolas Huin has a PhD in Materials Science that was obtained while working at EDF. At EDF and AREVA/Framatome, Dr. Huin was involved with more than 50 failure investigations pertaining to in service or in manufacturing degradation. The failures were often related to degradation of structural low Cr Ni based alloys and their associated welds and dissimilar metal welds through corrosion, SCC, wear, fatigue and mechanical degradation. Dr. Huin was the Head of Corrosion and Materials at the AREVA/Framatome Technical Centre and dealt primarily with the fitness for service assessment related to manufacturing processes/repair operation/mitigation pertaining to corrosion degradation and general troubleshooting. Such activities covered all of the manufacturing processes/materials involved in the manufacturing of PWR structural components including a wide range of welding configurations. Since joining CNL, Dr. Huin has been involved with R&D; related to corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of reactor materials and failure investigations of ex-service components including irradiated material. Dr. Huin was appointed by EPRI as a member of the SCC expert panel dealing with the degradation of austenitic alloys and their associated welds. Dr. Huin was also appointed as a scientific advisor of the H2020 European Commission Meactos program dealing with the general development of Mitigation techniques of SCC degradation.

David Durance

David joined the Bruce Power component engineering group in 2006, supporting the steam generator program. He is currently a metallurgist in the major components group. Before joining Bruce Power, David spend 10 years in manufacturing and process engineering roles. David holds a Master’s Degree in Materials Engineering from Queen’s University is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario.

Vivian Wang

Vivian is a Welding Engineer with Bruce Power in Tiverton, Ontario. Before joining Bruce Power in 2020, she had 8 years’ working experience in welding and metallurgy in the oil and gas industry. She is specialized in welding procedure development, material testing, inspection, as well as root cause failure analysis in relation to corrosion or erosion. She received her Master’s Degree at University of Alberta, in Chemical and Materials Engineering in 2011. She is also holding a Professional Engineer License and Project Management Professional certificate.

Moe Fadaee

Moe Fadaee – Kinectrics, Analyst. Moe is a licensed engineer and has published several research papers in nonlinear dynamics, mechanical vibration and CFD, including works on CANDU fuel bundle dynamic behavior. Moe is a leader in Machine Learning at Kinectrics and has successfully implemented machine learning algorithms in several projects in the nuclear industry. He has several years of experience in Parallel Programming, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. He developed a Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence program for George Brown college and has been teaching Machine Learning for 4 years. Moe holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering a M.Sc. in Project Management and Operational Development from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

Edmanuel Torres

Edmanuel Torres currently is the section head of the Intermolecular and Surface Modeling section in the Computational Physics Branch. He joined CNL in April of 2015. His research interests are in the area of atomistic computer simulations of materials to develop fundamental understanding of ceramics, metals and alloys, and the integration with experimental studies. Edmanuel received his Ph.D. in Physics from the International Max-Planck Research School (IMPRS-SurMat) at the Max-Planck-Institute for Iron Research (MPIE), Germany. He has held postdoctoral fellowships at the MPIE, Germany, the University of Alberta and National Institute for Nanotechnology (NRC-NINT) in Edmonton, Canada, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Alyson Allen-Bonneau

Alyson is an engineering intern for the Fuel Life Confirmation Project at Ontario Power Generation. She is currently working towards completing a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering with a minor in Sustainable Energy at the University of Toronto. Alyson is passionate about the developments in nuclear energy, metallurgy, and forensic analysis. She has conducted research as a First Year Curriculum Analyst investigating student recruitment with the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. After her degree, she hopes to pursue her interests as a Professional Engineer.

Daniel Gammage

Daniel is the Service Line Director of the Life Cycle Management & Component Integrity group at Kinectrics Inc. in Toronto, ON. His department is made up of a group of specialized staff providing, fuel channel assessment, feeder assessment, steam generator assessment, risk informed engineering, life-cycle management, fitness-for-service, and Inspection & Maintenance Engineering services to various clients. Daniel has worked in the nuclear industry since 2008, starting in the Life Cycle Engineering Group at B&W; Canada (BWXT). His experience includes performing fitness-for-service assessments and component condition assessments, providing support to CANDU, PWR, and BWR utilities, and supporting R&D; and OEM initiatives. Daniel graduated from the University of Waterloo Honours Mechanical Engineering program with an option in Management Sciences (2008). Daniel was also the 2017/2018 President of the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) and has Chaired the CNS’ Design & Materials Division and has taken part in organizing, presenting at, and Chairing several major Conferences over the past 10 years including Nuclear Plant Chemistry 2010, Steam Generator Conferences, CANDU Maintenance Conferences, INCC 2015, CNS Annual Conferences, and various EPRI sponsored events. Most recently Daniel has served as Treasurer of the CNS.
