Embalse CANDU 6 NPP (Argentina) Steam Generator Replacement Project

Date/time: February 1, 2022 15:00-16:30 Argentina Time (14:00-15:30 Atlantic, 13:00-14:30 Eastern)

Speakers: Mr. Pablo Luna, P.Eng

Summary: Following several years of planning and preparation, the Embalse NPP (Córdoba Province, Argentina), was shut down on December 31, 2015 to implement the execution phase of the Life Extension Project. The plant was connected back to gird on February 2019 after the largest single Refurbishment ever implemented by a CANDU 6 plant. Embalse NPP was the third CANDU 6 retubing project but, as a result of the ageing assessment (FAC degradation of tube support plates) the first one in implementing the steam generator replacement (SGR). The devices, removal/installation processes and planning for this task were developed to minimize impacts in the fuel channel replacement activity which was the critical path of the outage. In this sense the steam generator rigging and handling activities were planned during the calandria inspection phase of the retubing to minimize dose and interferences in the equipment airlock. This presentation will provide an overview of the main Embalse SGR activities with particular emphasis on the first of the kind replacement developed solution (rigging/handling, and fitting process), planning & engineering, along with the main challenges faced during the execution.
